Brooding the Chicks

First, at two days old, our chicks lived in a brooder in our basement. These pictures show them roosting on a branch and on the brooder guard, at around 4 weeks of age.

Chicks need temperatures of around 70 degrees Farenheit, minimum, until they are feathered out. We started with a regular 100-watt lightbulb, and as they grew feathers we gradually decreased the watts until there was only a 40-watt bulb hanging over the brooder. The chicks tended to find a spot somewhere in the brooder where they were the most comfortable.
